Our Mission

  • Promoting a positive image of Deaf people, their culture and their heritage.
  • Give Deaf and Hard of Hearing Albertans opportunities to express their ideas and develop their skills and talents
  • Preserve Deaf Culture and promote excellence in cultural endeavours among Deaf and Hard of Hearing Albertans
  • Encourage cultural interest and involvement among Deaf and Hard of Hearing citizens of Alberta Cultural Society of the Deaf
  • Preserves, encourages, and advances the arts and culture of Alberta population by featuring performing and visual arts, media arts and literature reflecting Deaf Hertiage. Deaf cultural values - including the importance of signed language, culturally appropriate behaviours in the community, the value of the collective and Deaf arts - known as Deaf View Image Art (De'VIA)
  • Foster Deaf pride
  • Encourage the use and recognition of ASL (American Sign Language) as distinct language
  • Further enlighten hearing society as to the capabilities of Deaf and Hard of hearing persons
  • Provide workshops for the Deaf Community on Deaf Culture, Deaf Studies and features of ASL
  • Support community colleges and other educational institutions in Alberta, which offer programs related to Deaf Studies and/or ASL
  • Provide American Sign Language Instructors of Alberta with workshops and updated information on ASL and Deaf Culture from ASLIC (American Sign Language Instructors of Canada)
  • Heighten awareness among the general public about bilingual/bicultural education of the Deaf
  • Provide resources (books and DVDs) about deafness
  • Support community colleges and other educational institutions in Alberta, which offer programs related to Deaf Studies and /or ASL
  • Host events such as Deaf Deaf World
